Finance Manager Job Description

Position Summary

Reporting to the CEO, the Finance Manager is responsible for managing the financial activities of the Association, providing strategic direction, leadership, and innovation to support the enhancement and fiscal accountability of the organization. The role will maintain a thorough understanding of the Association’s finances by leading all aspects of financial planning, developing and implementing formal financial policies, procedures, and performance standards, as well as ensuring the accurate and timely reporting of all financial data, with an aim of maintaining a fiscally responsible organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic and operational financial planning for the Association ensuring legal compliance
  • Analyze and interpret financial data to provide strategic insights and recommendations to the Executive Team and the Board of Directors. Partners with the Board Treasurer on key activities.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and performance standards
  • Regularly monitor and explore opportunities for funding that align with the Association’s strategic objectives and work with Executive Team to identify areas that require funding
  • Establish the overall budget for the Association as well as those for each department
  • Handle day-to-day accounting, including maintaining the general ledger and ensuring all Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable requirements are performed on-time
  • Provides direction to payroll consultant in consultation with the Treasurer
  • Monitor and track financial information, aligned with standards and regulations
  • Create, review, and record journal entries and monthly reconciliations
  • Identify emerging issues and trends to inform decision-making
  • Prepare financial accounts to trial balance level
  • Design and produce reports for analytical purposes
  • Prepare, report, and submit financial statements
  • Prepare financial forecast and retrospective on a quarterly and annual basis
  • Maintain and update the Association’s cash flow
  • Prepare all monthly finance meeting reports
  • Review bank accounts and balance sheets and perform reconciliations as needed
  • Process monthly and annual government taxes
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting is required
  • An Accounting Designation is preferred
  • 4 to 6 years of relevant work experience is required
  • A thorough knowledge of accounting principles and processes
  • Experience working in the Not-For-Profit sector is an asset
  • Experience in the preparation of internal financial statements for internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience and confidence in managing others
  • Financial systems knowledge and ability to quickly learn new accounting systems
  • High degree of proficiency with MS Office programs, specifically with Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ability to communicate effectively with all staff on sometimes sensitive information is an essential requirement
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong detail orientation and organization skills
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Strong analytical skills as well as the ability to creatively problem-solve
