As March unfolds, the spotlight shines brightly on the strength, resilience and achievements of Black women worldwide. This International Women’s Day, we set our sights high, envisioning a future where Black women flourish, unencumbered by barriers and limitations.

At the Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA), we stand firm in support of the aspirations and achievements of Black women, not just today but every day. Here’s what we’re championing for Black women to achieve this month and beyond:

1. Level Playing Field for Success: Black women are often confronted with systemic barriers that hinder their path to success. Let’s commit to dismantling these barriers and creating a level playing field where Black women have equal opportunities to thrive. Whether it’s breaking through glass ceilings or challenging biased practices, we can be intentional in creating a more inclusive and equitable society where Black women can reach their full potential.
2. Equal Salary in the Workplace: Despite their invaluable contributions, Black women continue to face disparities in wages compared to their counterparts. We’re advocating for equal pay for equal work, challenging barriers that perpetuate wage gaps based on race and gender. Through education, advocacy, and policy reform, Black women can be in workplaces where they are compensated fairly and equitably for their skills and expertise.
3. Funding for Black Women-Owned Businesses: Black women often face significant barriers when it comes to accessing funding for their businesses. This International Women’s Day, let’s pledge to advocate for equal access to funding and resources for Black women-owned businesses. When we invest in these businesses, we’re not just empowering individual entrepreneurs, we’re investing in the economic prosperity of our communities.
4. Targeted Sponsorship/Mentorship in the Workplace: Success doesn’t happen in isolation; it often requires guidance, support and mentorship along the way. Unfortunately, many Black women lack access to the mentorship and sponsorship opportunities that can propel their careers forward. Let’s prioritize targeted sponsorship and mentorship programs aimed at empowering Black women in the workplace. By investing in their professional development, we’re paving the way for future leaders and changemakers.
5. Authenticity and Self-Expression: Black women should never have to shrink themselves or dim their light to fit into societal norms. Today, we’re celebrating the beauty and diversity of Black womanhood and championing the right to authenticity. Black women should feel empowered to be unapologetically themselves, embracing their uniqueness and individuality without fear of judgment or prejudice. We reject the notion of being “too much” and champion a culture of inclusivity, acceptance, and empowerment, where every Black woman can shine brightly and boldly.
